Hardangerjøkulen

Hardangerjøkulen is the 6th largest glacier in Norway, located far east in Hordaland Fylke. The glacier covers 73 sq. Km. compared to Jostedalsbreen, 487 sq. Km. The plateau provides magnificient views over the surrounding landscape, including the mighty Hardangervidda plateau. The highest point of the glacier is usually defined at 1863m.

Demmevatnet is a lake within the glacier part of Rembesdalskåkje. This creates the largest and most dangerous threat floodage from a glacier lake in Norway should the ice dam break. For the people of Simadalen in Eidfjord kommune, each Autumn has been feared with the threat of the water releasing

In 1937 occurred the last major disaster in Simadalen when the ice dam collapsed,
all the farms were swept by the water, but incredibly noone died

Several cabins can be found on and around Hardangerjøkulen including Jøkulhytta at its top. Another one is the DNT cabin Demmevass built in 1896 when the construction of a tunnel was started in order to drain the dangerous Demmevatnet lake. Today, Demmevasshytta has become a popular place for the glacier enthusiasts. Allthough Rembesdalskåki is shrinking like most glaciers of the Norwegian west coast, this inaccessible part of the glacier remains an important and unique natural place.
